Aquarium Cleaning & Maintenance

We recommend cleaning your tank every two weeks to keep conditions ideal, and testing your water weekly to ensure that parameters remain at safe levels for your fish. When cleaning your tank, it is standard to perform a 25% water change by scooping out the top layer of your aquarium water and replacing it with (conditioned) tap water. To clarify: the new water should be treated with a dechlorinator like API STRESS COAT™ water conditioner before being added to your tank. In addition, ensure that you scrape the walls of your tank with an algae scraper (for either glass or acrylic aquariums) as needed to stay ahead of algae growth so it doesn't overrun your aquarium!

Lastly, it may be necessary to syphon your aquarium gravel to eliminate excess waste and uneaten food particles that have gotten buried. Even small amounts of waste can spike ammonia and nitrite levels in your tank, so syphoning is an important part of cleaning.
